The Cafe

>> Thursday, October 30, 2008

So many times while growing up
I've watched men stare in coffee cups,
And women in some small cafe
Gaze out windows, thoughts far away.

Sometimes I'd watch for quite awhile,
Curious, yet afraid to know
What hurt his eyes, or made her smile,
Then bow her head in silence so.

Other times I'd not watch so long,
For I still heard the children's song.
But hearts see things that ears don't hear,
And mine saw much year after year.

Sometimes while in a small cafe
I sit alone thoughts far away,
Then turn my head in time to see
Some younger person . . . watching me.

The Sweetness of Prayer

>> Friday, October 24, 2008

I'M BACK and posting again! I ended up being gone a little longer than I’d first intended (I was not back yet on the 18th , *Sarah*...). It’s amazing how much can change when gone just for a few weeks (like the weather! Brrr…), but I think more of the “change” is in perspective than in reality. A different change of pace for me (being away from the normal responsibilities and surroundings here) really opened the opportunity for me to spend some quality time in God’s word and in prayer. I was sharing with a friend that it seems like the more time I spend in prayer, the more I love and appreciate our Savior! I don’t mean to overuse hymns (ok, so I don’t think that’s possible), but I'd like to share with you the spirit that William Bradbury captures so well on the communion with God:

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
The joys I feel, the bliss I share,
Of those whose anxious spirits burn
With strong desires for thy return!
With such I hasten to the place
Where God my Savior shows His face,
And gladly take my station there,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless.
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His Word and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
May I thy consolation share,
Till, from Mount Pisgah’s lofty height,
I view my home and take my flight:
This robe of flesh I’ll drop and rise
To seize the everlasting prize;
And shout, while passing through the air,
“Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!”
