Why Guard Your Heart?

Sorry it’s been so long since I posted last! Since Church was canceled today due to the weather, I’ve been able to snatch a bit of time to get back to you all!

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Proverbs 4:23

In family devotions a few weeks back, we each were given a paper and pen, and were asked to write down all the reasons we could think of (in a block of time) for why one should guard his or her heart. It was a very strengthening study as we compared notes and talked over some of the reasons God has revealed to us for why we should obey this commandment. Even though we do not have to know the reasoning behind God’s commands before we obey them, it is a reminder that there is a purpose for everything God has told us to do!

Here are some of the reasons we found:

We should guard our heart with all diligence because...

>> God says to!
>> It is deceitful and easily persuaded.
>> It is ground that often can not be taken back once lost.
>> You will be a better decision maker.
>> It is a stumbling block to the saved and the lost if we do not guard it-- through such things as bad words or dark countenances.
>> God is glorified because His way is observed and He is honored.
>> He who is faithful in little will be faithful in much... guarding our heart prepares us for the "much".
>> It pleases Him.
>> It protects us.
>> If bad things aren't allowed in us, they won't flow out of us into others.
>> We won't have to wrestle with:
<>bad images
<>bad words
<>complaining words
<>bad music
<>bad attitudes

So why don't people guard their hearts?

>> They don't want to.
>> "No time" to take appropriate steps.
>> Management failure.
>> It is the path of least resistance.
>> It's not "them".
>> Charge against:
<> God
<> Circumstances
<> People

What reasons would you add? What have you learned about why we should guard our hearts?
